What is an NGO and its scope of work in 2021 ? Can they work as an extended arm of the government ? Can they overcome their shortcomings ?

What is an NGO and its scope of work in 2021

What is an NGO and its scope of work in 2021.This question would be the burning question for all of us. So let us start to understand the NGO first. Full form of NGO is Non-Governmental organization. As its name suggest it has nothing to do with the government. An organization, which is independent from Govt can be called nongovernmental organization. They are not controlled by the Govt. They are separate from the government. We may classify the NGOS in a different category. But work wise we can say that they are two types. There are NGOS which are making the plan and executing it. Then there are other NGOS they are working as in influence groups or a pressure group. Sometimes one NGO does both the work .NGO work on a particular purpose or a set of purpose. They work within well defined aims and objectives. They can be registered as society/Trust. NGO has to abide by the rules and regulation of local government. They act as nonprofit organization. Civil society celebrate world NGO day on 27th Feb.

If we try to get the answer of a question What is an NGO and its scope of work in 2021 by its definition then it is not so simple. We call an NGO non- governmental organization but sometimes Even government appoint them as well. They act as pressure group or influence group for a particular opinion in favor of a particular government.

Scope of work of an NGO

Scope of work of an NGO is huge. An individual or group of an individual can make an impact on every aspect of life .If some individuals decide to do a particular work in a society to make an impact. This is where idea of an NGO forms. After some time these very individuals decides to formalize the whole work and forms a committee. After the committee formation they go for the registration. This way new NGO has born. For example in a particular geography there is a water crisis and some people feel that they need to tackle the problem. So what they will do? They decided to form the committee. They registered it under society registration act and started working for the solution. There possible work would be:

  1. They will mobilize public opinion and pressurize govt agencies, elected leaders for providing the solution.
  2. They will collect the fund. Hire the expert. Make the blue print of the solution and then they will start implementing it.

In both ways NGO is trying to make an impact in the society. One NGO may be opting both the option simultaneously as well. Scope of work of an NGO is huge. They work on humanitarian issues, they do Charity, raise policy issues with the government, Educate public, and they participate in disaster management, Poverty eradication, and Literacy program. Lists are endless. There are NGO which work as an influencer under sponsored program. In this program   they take the payment form appointing agencies and the act in their behalf. Now a day NGOs are also doing cross purposes work. Sometimes rival business groups use them for cross purposes.

Area of operation of an NGO

NGO works in different geography. Some work at district level and some are at state level. There are NGOS which have foot print in multi states and in multi countries. Area of operation of an NGO depends upon the resources and reach of a particular NGO.

NGO can play very big role in the society. They can collaborate with government agencies. It can work in capacity building. They can work as an enabler. Since NGO has very high acceptance in the society so they can work as an extended arm of the govt. They can actively work in eradicating social evils.

Short comings of an NGO

There is another side of the NGO as well. Most of the NGOS are very enthusiastic about their aims and objective but lack the depth in their research. They lack the collaborative approach and many times end up over lapping the resources. There are NGOS who would like to earn the profit by unfair means. They are not very transparent with their finance. Sometimes they act as an interest group and in the process they dilute the whole purpose. At times, NGOS are not in the sync with local governments program and policy. Sometimes even contradict each other. Many times they get finance from interested groups so they don’t remain independent.
